A new place for coffee in Grand Rapids

You know how it goes…you can’t start your day without that first cup of coffee.

The National Coffee Association estimates that 70% of people in the United States drink coffee weekly and 62% drink coffee daily. On average, a coffee drinker drinks just over 3 cups a day.

Soon, on the northeast side of Grand Rapids, there will be a new place to stop and grab that first cup!

Scooter’s Coffee will be building a drive-thru in the Plainfield Plaza strip mall parking lot at 3150 Plainfield Avenue NE. Scooter’s has set up cafes in similar environments across the United States.

This will be Michigan’s first Scooter’s Coffee. Currently, the Omaha, Nebraska-based company has more than 300 cafes and drive-thru locations nationwide. Scooter’s Coffee was started in 1998 by Don and Linda Eckles in Bellevue, NE.

The signature drink at Scooter’s is The Caramelicious®. Their website says “you can’t go wrong ordering this rich, velvety caramel gem.”

Even though the Grand Rapids Planning Commission approved the plans on February 10, there were some concerns about the business concept. A planning commissioner, Susan Shannon, expressed concern that the only drive-in trade would not create a “gathering place for the neighborhood or even for people getting off the bus or getting on the bus “. The building would only be open to employees. Although she did not vote against the proposal, she felt it was a missed opportunity.

In addition to their coffee drinks – which can be served hot, iced or mixed – Scooter’s will also offer pre-packaged foods like bagels, muffins, sandwiches and wraps.
