Launch of a lightweight, fully recyclable top seal solution

Innovators in the packaging of fresh produce, StePac Ltd. expanded its premium seal line with new solutions to boost the retail fresh food packaging industry. Its recently upgraded portfolio includes lean and fully recyclable easy-peel film structures designed to be sealed on trays or containers with products such as summer fruits, fresh cut fruits and vegetables, and more.
The films are designed with StePac’s Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) condensation control technology, with capabilities to dramatically extend the shelf life of fresh produce and designed to preserve its quality and nutritional value. Its built-in modified atmosphere properties slow breathing inside the package, effectively delaying aging processes and inhibiting microbial decomposition.
Lighter, fully recyclable top seal solution
“We are leading the transition from using traditional shells for packaging fresh berries to leaner, greener and more attractive top sealing solutions,” notes Gary Ward, Ph.D., director of business development for StePac . “This change is designed to attribute multiple benefits. Firstly, it generates up to 25-30% reduction in plastic use as it is a lighter product compared to commonly used clamshell shells. Second, it is fully recyclable and third, it offers shelf life extending properties, improving food quality while reducing waste, which is in line with our sustainability strategy. Last but not least, it also guarantees food security.
These solutions are already being used to preserve the quality of summer fruit in the Israeli domestic market by Rafkor, an Israeli company that packages and markets fruit grown by farmers in Israel’s Upper Galilee region. “Since we started using StePac’s fully recyclable top seal solution for cherries, lychees, stone fruits and pears, we have noticed a reduction in waste and quality complaints from our customers,†notes Haviv Aharon, CEO of Rafkor.
reclosable for convenience on the go
StePac’s stylish reclosable top seal solutions are also gaining traction. The innovative top seal is made of a laminate structure made up of two layers, with a pressure sensitive adhesive in between. A cutout in the bottom layer of the film opens a window that displays the products packed in the tray and can be cut to desired dimensions. The adhesive between the two layers is strong enough that the top layer of the film can be peeled and resealed on the bottom layer up to 20 times, making it ideal for multiple servings and can be applied to PET trays and PP as well as eco-sustainable materials. Each time it is closed, the Modified Atmosphere (AM) activity regenerates and continues to preserve the quality of the food inside the consumer’s refrigerator.
The reclosable film also features a tamper-evident seal assuring customers that the packaging has not been tampered with or tampered with in any way prior to purchase. Ward remembers the strawberry scare in Australia two years ago, where sewing needles were stuck in strawberries wrapped in shells.
